2012 Honda CBR1000RR Fire Blade | Review

RacerZone was recently invited to the launch of the NEW Generation 2012 Honda CBR 1000 RR. Something new to us so let me start with this little intro to give some perspective. I really did not know what to expect… Well besides what the itinerary told me, fly to PE, have drinks, food and ride the bike. I got a bit nervous when I realized that I was the only person to rock up with my race suit as “hand luggage” but after all the obvious stares I thought well at least I am the only “Brave” guy that had his helmet checked in as normal luggage and not in my hand. Ha ha ha! Back at you okes.

So we got on the plane, all familiar faces, Sheridan Morais (International Superbike Racer), Donovan Fourie (Bike SA), Dave Petersen (2wheels) and the list goes on. Some more stares….. I can only imagine what they were thinking…Who the hell is this guy? Hey, who can blame them? RacerZone is the new kid on the block.

The next day we were off testing the new generation Honda CBR 1000 RR on the legendary Aldo Scribante race track.

I took out the ABS model first, and let me tell you I am NOT really a fan of fancy intimidating electronic systems but the new CBR ‘s ABS system surprised me, to be honest…one of the best I have ever felt. It was as if the new ABS kept the bike more stable rather than trying to make me a better rider under brakes. Let’s say the bike gave me better control under severe braking. Good Job Honda !

Now we move over to the NON-ABS operated bike. Personally as a racer I would prefer the non-ABS version. Yes the ABS is more stable but my choice is personal, I like the bike allowing me to move it around under braking. The price difference also has to be in the equation. The NON-ABS comes into the market from R141 999.00 VS R151 999.00 for the ABS equipped version. That is R10 000.00 to spend on additional groceries.

The new generation CBR 1000 RR might look like it only had a face lift but don’t be fooled.

The two most significant visual changes include the sharpened nose and new 12 spoke wheels.

The 12 spoke lighter, better looking wheels help the bike to turn in better, assists in braking and allows the rider to feel more in control of the bike. Besides the handling improvements the new 12 spoke wheel just looks a stack better!

The exciting new dash board also has allot more to offer than the 2010 spec CBR 1000 RR’s panel. I was ecstatic to see that it had an on board lap timer and guess what…you even get the long awaited gear indicator with the new CBR 1000 Fireblade. The RPM is electronically displayed and extremely easy to read with just a glance. It also comes with more functionality like shift light settings and 4 different RPM display settings.

Let’s talk handling! The front and rear suspension of the new generation CBR 1000 RR has also been modified for all round handling improvement and better control. The inverted 43mm front forks by Showa now offer big piston technology. These allow smoother travel and more damping capabilities, ultimately improving handling and grip under braking.

The rear suspension has a all new Showa ‘cushion mechanism’ that offers better control under acceleration and allot more road contact on the rear tyre. I have to be critical and say that the rear shock did start to overheat after 12 or so aggressive laps and I could feel the rear start to slide out and the bike spinning up.

The fuel injection system has undertaken some changes and the power delivery is now even better than the already smooth 2010 spec, this according to the factory also improved the fuel economy by 10%.

In general the bike delivers all that is needed and more from an ultimate performance sport bike. I was surprised to get lap times within 8 seconds of the actual lap record on this standard road trim bike fitted with Pirelli SC2 tyres on the Aldo Scribante track. That must compliment this new Honda CBR 1000 RR. The Liquid-cooled Inline four-cylinder 4-stroke engine delivers just enough , 175 horsepower (claimed) to be exact. The smooth delivery of power is what makes this bike unique for me.

Would I buy one? Yes the Honda has everything I need with a good price tag.

The CBR  1000 RR is available in 3 exiting colors:

KFC ADD HOPE BIKERS BREAKFAST PRESS RELEASE | KFC Charity Event

KFC ADD HOPE BIKERS BREAKFAST PRESS RELEASE
Sunday the 30th October saw some of the hardiest charity supporters don their leathers and brave the rainy weather in support of the KFC Add Hope Bikers Breakfast. Dries van der Walt (Tripper) and the rest of the Marshals from Think Bike arrived bright and early to enjoy a complimentary juice at KFC Cosmo before preparing all the riders for the route ahead.

The metropolitan police Blockade did nothing to dampen the group’s enthusiasm and everyone arrived at KFC Damdoryn in no time to enjoy a complimentary KFC a.m. breakfast with a hot KFC Cappuccino. The band, Marula Boom entertained the riders and much to the delight of Shado Alston from SuperScoot, performed their very own song “Die Sexy Hoender”.
The Harley Davidson Pretoria chapter arrived at KFC Damdoryn in time for the sun to come out and to receive their KFC hampers. R7000.00 was raised in support of Add Hope and KFC thanks everyone who braved the weather to support this event.
In particular, KFC would like to thank www.racerzone.co.za for donating two tickets for the professional photographer, Carryn Morrison and her assistant from CMorphoto’s to attend the event. CMorphoto’s documented the day for KFC Franchisee, van Eeden Kitskos.
KFC Cosmo City and KFC Damdoryn are two of eight KFC restaurants owned by van Eeden Kitskos, a hospitality group which believes their success has been achieved through the dedication and service-driven attitude of all their staff members.
The KFC Add Hope Bikers Breakfast will be hosted by van Eeden Kitskos once again in October 2012 only because,It is SO GOOD supporting charity!
